Politecnico di Torino and Giacomini S.p.A. Together for Innovation in Building Energy Efficiency
The University and the Company will collaborate on research and training activities in the field of building energy efficiency, with a particular focus on optimizing the integration of building envelopes and technological systems to reduce energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.
The Politecnico di Torino and Giacomini S.p.A. today signed a partnership agreement to support the development and innovation processes in the field of building energy. The Turin-based University and the Company – specialized in the production of hydronic components and systems for heating, air conditioning, fire protection, and sanitary water management for the residential and industrial sectors – will collaborate for the next two years on research and training activities. Their shared goal is to reduce energy consumption and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions, achievable through the optimal integration of building envelope and plant systems.
The collaboration will involve both research, development, and innovation – with joint participation in regional, national, European, and international research funding programs, as well as promoting scientific and technological culture in the region through dedicated initiatives and events – and teaching activities, such as study periods, internships, and seminars in the framework of shared projects, offering students and graduates the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of the job market and study the applications of their research in practice.
Specifically, the shared research areas will include: the development of ideal plant solutions in the technological trajectory toward the transition to all-electric systems, in line with the latest European Union Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which aims to decarbonize Europe's building stock by 2050; the reflection on the production of sanitary hot water, with particular attention to consumption metering and the evaluation of the impacts of the Water Directive, which establishes a framework for community action on surface, transitional, coastal, and groundwater; and the increase of actions for utilizing hydrogen as a sustainable energy source.
Therefore, starting today, the Politecnico di Torino and Giacomini S.p.A. are committed to working together to provide innovative solutions in building energy, taking a leading role in achieving energy-saving goals – for maximum efficiency in consumption, without waste – comfort in living spaces – for well-being in every environment – and sustainability – for respect for the environment and people.
“The memorandum of understanding with the Giacomini Group demonstrates the strong collaboration the Politecnico di Torino has with the significant manufacturing entities in the Piedmont region,” said Rector Stefano Corgnati. “In particular, our research interaction with the Giacomini Group, which produces products related to building climate control and sanitary hot water production, allows us to explore and design cutting-edge technological solutions in a sector that is particularly strategic for the energy transition, energy efficiency, and fully in line with the new European directive on building energy performance.”
“In such a complex socio-political and economic period for international companies, having the support of qualified research bodies is crucial,” said Giacomini CEO Elia Filiberti. “The collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino was born with the fundamental objective of continuing to stand out in the global market for innovation and technological excellence made in Italy.”
“The synergy with the Politecnico aims to further qualify our company in the field of integrated systems for single-family, multi-residential, and commercial buildings, developing radiant-based solutions to ensure the best comfort and maximum energy efficiency through the use of renewable energy sources,” concluded Andrea Bighinzoli, Marketing Director of the Piedmont-based Group.
